Philadelphia American Revolution Conference

This is the location of the President's House in Philadelphia.  George Washington lived in this house from 1790-1797 and John Adams occupied it from 1797-1800.  In 2000, foundations of the original building were discovered and the site was developed.  George Washington did have slaves with him when he lived in Philadelphia.  Even though slavery was technically illegal in Pennsylvania, a loophole existed that allowed slave owners to keep slaves in Pennsylvania for six months.  After six months expired, the slave would be freed.  So, what slave owners commonly did was to "rotate" their slaves every six months to avoid having to free them.
